Hair Band & Wellness Program at UCI Care Home An ongoing UWOCASO initiative for patients & caregivers
At the Uganda Cancer Institute Care Home, healing and hope happen every week. Skilling Brings Hope is UWOCASO’s continuous hybrid program that brings together cancer patients and their caregivers for both practical skills training and psychosocial support.
Each session we:
- Learn easy-to-replicate crafts — starting with hair bands, with new skills added each month. Participants say “it’s the first craft I can do at home and sell”
- Create income opportunities — hair bands are simple to learn, low-cost to start, and give families facing treatment costs a dignified way to earn.
- Receive counselling & peer support — a safe space to share, be heard, and find strength together.
- Celebrate hidden talents — as one patient from the Acholi Sub-region shared: “Thank you, UWOCASO, for helping me identify my hidden talent.”
The joy in the room reminds us: skills restore confidence, and community restores hope. Skills for livelihoods. Counseling for healing. Community for strength.
